Description
CESALPINO (Andrea). *Praxis universae artis medicae*, comprehensively covering both general principles and the specific diagnosis, assessment and treatment of all conditions affecting the human body beyond the natural order. Treviso: R. Meietti, 1606. In-12, [16], 715 pp., contemporary vellum. (Vellum missing from the front cover (cut away), faint water stains, slight worm damage at the top of the last 100 pages, heavier water stain at the end of the volume with marginal loss of paper on the last three leaves).
Second edition of a treatise on practical medicine published in 1602–03 under the title ‘Artis medicae pars prima[-secunda]’, comprising sections on fevers, poisons, venereal diseases, and diseases and conditions affecting the head, thorax, abdomen and genitals. The section on the thorax contains a discussion of Cesalpino’s ideas on general blood circulation. “Cesalpino preceded Harvey in the discovery of the concept of circulation, and Harvey must have been aware of his ideas, but Cesalpino’s concept of circulation was not supported by convincing experimental work or quantitative evidence” (Garrison-Morton, 755).
