Constitutions of the Principal States of Europe and the United States of America. Paris, Buisson, 1791–1793. 5 volumes in-8, fawn half-calf, smooth spines decorated with gilt and blind-stamped bands.
Third edition for vols. 1 and 2 (1793), first edition for vols. 3 to 5 (1791–1793). Pages 321 to 384 of volume 2 are devoted to the Constitution of the United States, and pages 341 to 411 of volume 3 to that of the French Constitution. A study of the constitutions of Germany, Poland, Sweden, Venice, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Naples, Spain and Switzerland. Excluding the sixth volume, which, as is often the case, was published in 1801.
Jacques-Vincent Delacroix (1743–1832), a lawyer, publicist and highly prolific author of political essays, published a six-volume work entitled Constitutions of the Principal States of Europe and the United States of America with Buisson between 1791 and 1801. Over the course of a decade and amidst the upheavals of the Revolution, Delacroix attempted in vain to paint a picture, to capture an image of Europe based on the constitutions of each state. Taking into account the subject he addresses within the chronological framework of the publication, it is possible to discern a discourse on Europe at the end of the 18th century, one that is often incomplete due to the rapid changes in the national and international political situation.
