Description
MACHINES and INVENTIONS approved by the Royal Academy of Sciences, from its foundation to the present day; with their descriptions, by Mr Gallon. Paris, Boudet, 1776–1778. 2 folio volumes (text and plates). 19th-century half-calf binding. Text (2 volumes in one): 203 and 95 pp. – One volume comprising plates (Plates 250 to 495). A deluxe edition, printed in a limited run, of this important overview of technical inventions from the first half of the 18th century. This collection of Machines and Inventions was originally published in 1735 by Martin, Coignard fils and Guérin in 6 quarto volumes. The printer Boudet added a seventh volume to this series in 1777, which dealt with inventions approved between 1734 and 1754. However, ‘noting that certain enthusiasts regretted being unable to include these seven volumes in the series on the Arts and Sciences published by the Academy, as it is in folio format, Boudet decided, to satisfy their wish, to produce a few copies in this folio format’, as he states on the reverse of the title page. The first volume of this folio series comprises the six volumes published in 1735, and the second volume contains the material from the seventh quarto volume published in 1777. Each has its own title page, with no mention of volume numbering, and includes an index. The text is printed in two columns. 495 machines and inventions are described and illustrated. Like the quarto edition, this one is illustrated with 404 plates (including 4 fold-out plates), comprising 499 figures.
