Description
"[ALGERIA]. DUPONCHEL (Adolphe). The Trans-Saharan Railway: a colonial link between Algeria and Sudan. Preliminary studies of the project and mission report, with general and geological maps. Montpellier, Bohem et fils, 1878. In-8, navy blue half-basane, ribbed spine, covers preserved. (modern binding). A rare edition of this important report. This ambitious project comprised 2,574 km of track across the desert. Charles Freycinet, then Minister of Public Works, approved the project in 1879, and it was to investigate the feasibility of the project on site that the Flatters mission was sent in 1881; its failure delayed the resumption of studies and the start of works by 80 years. The project was abandoned in 1949 after only 250 km of track had been laid. Two fold-out maps, one in black and white and one in colour. A copy belonging to François-Prosper Jacqmin (1820–1889), a graduate of the École Polytechnique who had been Director-General of the Eastern Railways since 1872, with an autograph dedication by the author opposite the title page. The five signed autograph letters enclosed with this volume, which cover various aspects of the project since the dispatch of a copy of this report, are also addressed to Jacqmin."
