Paris, Gaume Frères, 1850. 2 volumes in-8, in contemporary green half-shagreen, spines decorated with gilt panels. (foxing, worn corners).
Illustrated with 2 portraits and 2 separate engravings.
This copy is enhanced by an autograph letter signed by the author, bound at the front of the volume.
The memoirs of Alexandre Andryane (1797–1863) enjoyed immense commercial success from their first publication in 1837–38. A former aide-de-camp to General Merlin, a friend of Buonarroti, and a sympathiser of the Italian branch of the Charbonnerie, Andryane had been arrested in Milan following the 1823 attempted uprising led by Federico Confalonieri. Sentenced to life imprisonment and held at the Spielberg Fortress in Moravia until his pardon in 1832, he recounted his imprisonment in the style of Silvio Pellico. His accounts helped to popularise the Italian national cause in France.
