D’ETROYAT (Adrien). An Elementary Treatise on Naval Architecture. – Vessels of War and Merchant Ships. Atlas. (Nantes, Charpentier 1846 or 1863). 29 and 15 plates mounted on cardboard, 47.5 x 62 cm. These treatises, which have become extremely rare, are undoubtedly the finest of their period; they contain all the practical knowledge required to design, build and fit out a merchant vessel. The author, Adrien d’Etroyat, was trained between 1825 and 1830 by naval architects, after which he devoted himself in Lorient to the construction of merchant ships; in his own words, “the construction of some one hundred merchant ships, and the management of numerous shipping companies have honed his expertise’”.
