LAUZUN (Duke of). Memoirs. Paris, Barrois l’aîné, 1822. 8vo, brown half-basane, spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped bands and a gilt label at the foot. First edition. Armand Louis de Gontaut-Biron (1747–1793) was granted the title of Duke of Lauzun by Louis XV on the occasion of his marriage. The publication of these Memoirs sparked controversy over their authenticity, as well as a scandal due to the amorous scenes they contained. Of particular note is his account of the American War, in which he served under Rochambeau. Included with this volume: [ROUSSEL]. Secret Correspondence of Several Illustrious Figures, in which the causes of the divisions amongst the members of the royal family during the final years of Louis XVI are revealed, as well as the animosity that existed between the Queen and Philippe d’Orléans. Paris, Lerouge, 1802. 8vo, full red calf, plain ribbed spine, red edges. The frontispiece portrait of Louis-Armand de Gontaut-Biron is missing. Pages 247 to 279 complete the Memoirs of the Duke of Lauzun (1789–1793)."
