[PRISONS]. Set of 4 volumes: MONNIER (Henri). Les Bas-fonds de la société. Paris, (Jules Claye, 1862). In-8, brown morocco half-bound with corner pieces, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed. (Lanscelin). Scattered foxing. An edition of 200 copies printed on laid paper. Partly original edition. It contains 8 pieces, the first three of which had already appeared in *Scènes populaires*. Monnier encountered difficulties in obtaining permission to have them printed. Permission was granted on condition that the book would be printed in a run of no more than 200 copies, that it would not be sold commercially, and that it would be distributed by the author himself (Vicaire, vol. V, col. 1018). Engraved bookplate by A. Kuhnholtz. BONNERON (Géo). The Prisons of Paris: Our Penitentiary System. Illustrations by F. Seguin. Paris, Didot, (1898). Illustrated with 30 separate plates, including 4 colour engravings, and engravings within the text. As is often the case, the prospectus on prisons on pages 469 to 472 is missing. All 4 volumes.
