It comprises 80 volumes divided into 8 series, bound in full red percaline with the polychrome decorations of the Hetzel edition. There are two types of cover: front covers featuring a world map, spines featuring an anchor (A), or front covers featuring a steamship, spines featuring a lighthouse (P). Each series is numbered in the final volume of the series. Subscribers purchased the books as complete series. Series 1 to 4 are easy to find. Series 5 and 6 are harder to come by, whilst series 7 and 8 are relatively rare, as subscribers had stopped purchasing them.
