Description
(A collection of three documents, including two manuscripts). The case of Marie-Madeleine Anne Dreux d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers (born 2 July 1630, beheaded at the Place de Grève on 17 July 1676). A 150-page folio manuscript entitled: Account of the death of Mad. de B (Brinvilliers) by M. (Abbé Edme) Pirot (her confessor, 1631–1713), Doctor of the House and Society of the Sorbonne, (fine handwriting). Handwritten ex-libris of the ‘Collegii Parisiensis Societatis Jesus’. Initialled in accordance with the decree of 5 July 1763 (Mesnet). A handwritten note states that this rare manuscript was purchased on 6 April 1861, and a printed article pasted onto the inside cover of the binding tells us that it belonged successively to Mr Moignon, M de Monmerqué and purchased by Mr Roullier, a lawyer at the Council of State, who published an edition of it in 1883 through the publisher Lemerre in two volumes, under the title ‘La Marquise de Brinvilliers, récit de ses derniers moments’. An important manuscript relating to the story of Brinvilliers’ redemption for her crimes. Bound at the beginning of the volume is a printed work by LA GUESLE (Jacques, 1557–1612). A detailed and true account of the criminal trial of Monsieur le Maréchal de Biron, composed by Messire Jacques de la Gueste, Attorney General to the King. Undated (17th century) and without publisher (Simon de Colines, Paris). 86 folio pages (without Simon de Colines’s mark), title, headband and initial letter decorated. Bound together with: “Question Royale et sa décision, by Jean Du Verger de Hauranne, Abbot of St-Cyrien”. Manuscript copy of 25 folio pages. One folio volume (36x24 cm), marbled calfskin (18th century), cap bands torn off. Ex-libris of M. Roullier.
