[BALZAC (Honoré de)]. The Code of Honest People, or The Art of Not Being Duped by Scoundrels. Paris: J.-N. Barba, bookseller, 1825; 12mo (18x11 cm), paperback, printed cover, vignette (slight discolouration). xxiij-252 pages (a few pinholes). First edition, written in collaboration with Horace Raisson. Thus begins the preface: ‘In these times, money brings pleasure, respect, friends, success, talent, and even wit; this sweet metal must therefore be the constant object of love and concern for mortals of all ages and conditions, from kings to street girls, from landowners to exiles. But this money, the source of all pleasures, the origin of all glory, is also the goal of all endeavours.” This work is one of Honoré de Balzac’s earliest works.
