Description
STEVENS (Alfred) and GERVEX (Henri). History of the Century, 1789–1889, photogravure reproductions of paintings by Alfred Stevens and Gervex. Librairie artistique H. Launette et Cie, G. Boudet, Paris (1889); folio (50x40 cm), half-cloth binding, title and publisher’s name gilded on the cover. Bound volume decorated with 12 plates (slightly warped) with the silhouettes and names of the people depicted opposite, plates reproduced by Dujardin and Pierre Petit. Photograph of the panoramic canvas from the 1889 World’s Fair, intended for display in a rotunda in the Tuileries Gardens. The circular canvas measured 120 m in length and 20 m in height, depicting 640 figures embodying the grandeur of France. After the exhibition, this panorama was cut up and distributed among the various shareholders who had financed the project.
