Description
DEL RIO (Martín). Disquisitionum magicarum libri sex: containing a thorough refutation of curious arts and vain superstitions. Lyon, Jean Pillehotte, 1608. Folio, [12] leaves, 553 pp. Title page engraved by J. de FORNAZERIS, headpieces, ornate initials and tailpieces, text in two columns. Soft ivory-coloured vellum of the period. ‘A much more sought-after edition than the quarto edition, as it contains several tables and indexes.’ (Caillet). All the knowledge of the period on demonology, witchcraft, magic, superstitions, astrology, alchemy and the occult arts brought together in six books by the Antwerp Jesuit Martín DEL RIO (1551–1608), one of the most influential theologians and demonologists of the 17th century and a fervent defender of the witch trials conducted by the Inquisition. ‘Book VI is of particular interest as it reveals the role played by priests in these infamous trials.’ (Caillet). Handwritten ex-libris and ex-dono inscriptions from the period. Caillet, 2967, does not cite this edition, but only the folio edition of 1612; the same applies to Dorbon, 119. The top of the spine is missing; the ink title has probably been removed. The vellum is stained and partially detached from the text. A few foxing spots and water stains. A reference work for the study of demonology and inquisitorial trials.
