DIDEROT (Denis) and D'ALEMBERT (Jean le Rond). Encyclopédie, or A Rational Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Trades [...]. Lausanne [vol. I], Lausanne and Bern [vols. II–XXXIX], Société Typographique, 1778–1781. 36 in-8° volumes of text and 3 small in-4° volumes of plates. Fawn half-basane with green corners, plain decorated spine, title and volume labels in black morocco, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). A genuine first edition in octavo as described by J. Lough, with the characteristics of the title page in Volume I, as noted by Adams. Engraved frontispiece portraits of DIDEROT, unsigned, in Vol. I, and of D’ALEMBERT, by F. LARDY, in Vol. II. Complete with all its plates (16 full-colour plates out of the text volumes, and over 400 plates, including numerous full-colour ones, on mathematics, music, surgery, astronomy, etc.). From the library of Alexandre Emmanuel Louis de BAUFFREMONT-COURTENAY (1773–1833), appointed president of the electoral college of Haute-Saône in 1812 by Napoleon I and who voted for the execution of Marshal NEY at his trial. Some foxing, very rare water stains, a few minor brown stains; vol. XXXVIII affecting a few numbers; very slight defects to the bindings.
