[DORÉ (Gustave)]. LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Fables. Paris, Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, 1867. 2 folio volumes of LX, 317 pp.; 383 pp. Titles and borders in red. Soft red publisher’s percaline cloth, smooth spine decorated with embossed panels, title and volume number gilded, covers decorated with embossed borders, title gilded on the upper cover, monograms ‘HM’ and ‘EG’ gilded on the lower cover (Engel Fils). A deluxe copy, featuring the large plates printed on China paper, constituting the second edition, originally published in 58 instalments, the first dated 10 November 1866. Portrait of the author as a frontispiece, vignettes within the text and 85 full-page illustrations, including the supplementary plate ‘Les devineresses’ bound into Volume II, p. 46. Vicaire, IV, 905. A few rare foxing spots; interior fresh; some slight defects to the binding, including a split in the upper head joint of Vol. II; percaline somewhat faded. Nevertheless, a fine copy of Gustave DORE’s masterpiece.
