DUMONT D’URVILLE (Jules). Voyage to the South Pole and Oceania aboard the corvettes *L’Astrolabe* and *La Zélée*, undertaken by order of the King during the years 1837–1838–1839–1840. Pictorial Atlas. Paris, Gide et Cie, 1846. 2 folio-sized atlas volumes. 2 frontispiece titles, 198 plates [nos. 192 and 6 bis] and 8 engraved maps. Green half-shagreen with corner pieces, spine with 5 faux-nerves, title and volume numbers gilt, gilt fillet on the covers, gilt edges. (Late 19th-century binding). First edition of the Atlas, complete with all plates and maps. With its 10 in-8° volumes of text and 9 large fold-out maps. Paris, Gide, 1841. Paperback. First edition, in this format, of the first ten volumes of this major exploratory expedition to the Pacific and the Southern Polar region. The complete account of the voyage was published over a period of thirteen years, up to 1855. These first ten volumes constitute the official report of the voyage and comprise all the volumes published during DUMONT D’URVILLE’s lifetime. Following his accidental death in 1842, the work was continued and completed under the supervision of Mr DUMOULIN, who added sections on anthropology, botany, geology, hydrography, zoology and physics. Complete with its nine large fold-out maps bound at the end of the first nine volumes, showing the routes taken by the *Astrolabe* and the *Zélée* through the Strait of Magellan, the South New Shetland and Orkney Islands, the Manga-Reva Islands, the Viti Archipelago, the Solomon Islands, Borneo, the south-west coast of New Guinea, the South Pole region and the Torres Strait. The Atlas: Enriched with a colour plate of costumes from Tikopia and Vanikoro in Volume II. A tear, with no loss of material, has been repaired on plate 47; plate 126 is loose; plate 117, which has an incorrect title, is correctly bound after plate 87, as indicated in the table of contents. Some foxing and browning. Scuffing to the binding. The text: Foxing, small marginal tears on the map in Volume IX, a few very minor tears at the fastenings, a dark line in Volume X, minor defects to the covers, including a torn front cover with a loss in Volume VIII.
