Description
ERASMUS. *In Praise of Folly*. Introduction, translation and notes by JACQUES and ANNE-MARIE YVON, based on the copy of the 1515 edition by J. FROBEN, illustrated by HOLBEIN and held at the Basel Museum of Fine Arts, original woodcuts by JEAN CHIÈZE. Paris, Union Latine d’Éditions, 1967. 2 vols. small quarto. The facsimile is bound in full leather imitating ivory vellum, with a long spine bearing the author’s name and covers extensively decorated with blind-stamped designs; the text volume (181 pp.) is bound in black box leather, with a long spine and the author’s name in gold, the covers adorned with a gold motif depicting a jester and his marotte climbing and descending the steps of a staircase, illustrated endpapers, and a gilt head; accompanied by a study booklet by Hanspeter LANDOLT (14 pp.), with a green cloth-covered frontispiece bearing the title in white. The whole set is housed in a slipcase covered in wood-effect paper, with a red velvet interior.
A facsimile edition published to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of ERASMUS.
Text volume illustrated with 19 original woodcuts by Jean CHIÈZE within the text, including one as a frontispiece.
