First edition, an important source on Beijing in the late 19th century, written by the Lazarist Apostolic Vicar Alphonse FAVIER, who arrived in China in 1862 and oversaw the reconstruction of the Pé-t’ang Cathedral in 1887. The work is divided into two parts. The first deals with the history of Beijing, from its origins to the end of the 19th century, including the history of Christianity in China. The second part focuses on describing the city, its monuments, gardens and palaces, as well as court customs, the arts and the daily life of the people of Beijing.
