Description
LE ROUX (Jean). A compendium of the nobility of Burgundy, Limburg, Luxembourg, Guelders, Flanders, Artois, Haynau, Holland, Zeeland, Namur, Mechelen and other provinces of His Catholic Majesty [...] beginning in the year 1424. and continued up to the year 1714. Approved by the emperors, kings, dukes and sovereign princes of the Netherlands. Lille, no publisher’s name, 1715. In-4°, 400 pp. Soft, reused ivory-coloured vellum, title in ink on the spine (18th-century binding).
Enriched with numerous scholarly handwritten notes in the margins from the 18th century, as well as documents drafted during that period and the following century (DETRAUX). Following this, on pages 401 to 642, a substantial extract from the 1760 Nobiliaire des Pays-Bas has been copied in pen, covering the years 1715–1740, the alphabetical index, and the supplement covering the years 1450–1712.
From the library of Count E. du TERTRE, with his engraved bookplate repeated. Other handwritten bookplates.
Missing the first three quires comprising the title page (which has been restored in handwriting), the 19 pp. of the chronological table and the catalogue page; p. 13 restored with damage to a few letters, which have been reconstructed by hand, pp. 297–304 torn with a gap in the middle of the page, replaced in full by handwritten text; Fff1, Fff3 and Fff4 from the ‘Table of family names and surnames’ are missing and have been replaced by 10 handwritten pages, to which several names have been added.
The binding is very loose.
A working document, as it stands, which is nonetheless of some interest.
