LIGER (Louis). *La Nouvelle Maison rustique*, or *A General Treatise on All Rural Property: How to Maintain and Increase It*; Previously published by Sieur Liger. Eighth edition, considerably expanded and better organised; including the properties of medicinal herbs, pharmacy, and decisions of French law on rural matters; and enriched with intaglio engravings. By M. ***. Paris, Durand, 1762. 2 volumes in-4°, comprising iii, [5], 916, [2] pp. Frontispiece and 14 large plates; [8], 894, [26] pp. 23 large plates. Marbled fawn calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands and floral decoration, title page in red morocco, volume pages in fawn morocco, double blind-stamped fillet on the covers, gilt edges, red edges. (Contemporary binding). A classic work covering all aspects of rural life. It is illustrated with 38 copperplate plates, including two fold-out plates, and numerous woodcuts within the text. In addition to agriculture and horticulture proper, it includes chapters on poultry, horses and pack animals, horned cattle, pigs, bees (honey bees), silkworms, water and forests, the kitchen garden, the orchard, ornamental gardens and herb gardens, the production of wines and spirits, vinegar, cider, perry, beer, fishing and hunting (for wolf, wild boar and deer). The final chapter is devoted to cooking, pastry-making, jams and liqueurs. At the end of the second volume, a very rare advertising leaflet dated 13 August 1777 has been bound in, promoting a vermifuge, ‘Lemithochorton’, developed by a Greek doctor living in Ajaccio, Mr Dimo STEFANOPOLI. Bookplate by CHALENDAR. Water damage to the frontispiece and the first few folios of Volume I; defects in the bindings, including the absence of the title label on Volume I.
