Description
[Medicine]. DEVENTER (Hendrik van). Important Observations on the Manual of Obstetrics. Part One [–Part Two]. Paris, Pierre-François Giffart, 1734. In-4°, xxxix, [1], 431, [1] pp. Fauve scaly calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands and floral decoration, title page in red morocco, double blind-stamped line on the covers, gilt edges, red edges. (Contemporary binding). A treatise translated and expanded by Jacques-Jean BRUHIER D’ABLAINCOURT, the original having been published the previous year. It comprises 40 figures on 37 separate plates (including 1 fold-out) depicting the various positions of the infant. Hendrik Van DEVENTER (1651–1724), a Dutch obstetrician, paid equal attention to the well-being of both the mother and the infant, and made moderate use of instruments such as forceps. Through his clinical practice and his manual, intended for midwives, he significantly advanced contemporary understanding of the pelvis and the mechanism of childbirth, thereby laying the foundations of modern obstetrics. First published in Latin in Leiden (1701, Part I; 1723, Part II), Deventer’s work has been translated into many languages. The French translation by the physician BRUHIER D’ABLAINCOURT is regarded as the best and most comprehensive from a scientific perspective; it helped to establish DEVENTER’s reputation throughout Europe. Some foxing, a few marginal water stains with slight damage to figs. 15, 16 and 17; crushed corners, 3 split binding edges. A good copy nonetheless.
