Description
[Medicine]. DUMAS (Charles-Louis). General Theory of Chronic Diseases, to serve as a foundation for the theoretical and practical understanding of these diseases. Paris, Deterville, 1812. In-8°, lvi, 683, 1 blank leaf, 44, 4 pp. Fawn-coloured root-tanned sheepskin, spine with 5 floral-decorated false raised bands, title page in raspberry-coloured morocco, double blind-stamped fillet on the covers, gilt roulette on the edges, edges speckled with red. (Contemporary binding).
First edition.
A renowned physician, Charles-Louis DUMAS (1765–1813) first became a doctor at La Charité in 1781, he became a lecturer in pathology at Montpellier, then a physician at the Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon and, in 1795, professor of physiology at Montpellier until his death.
In this work, having studied the nature and development of these diseases, and before addressing the question of their treatment, the author devotes over a hundred pages to reflections on ‘the circumstances that contribute to the onset and progression of chronic diseases’, notably ‘the influence of constitution and temperament’, that of ‘age and sex’, that of ‘passions or emotions’, and also that of ‘air, seasons and climates’.
Very slight damage to the binding; a good copy.
