Brest, Romain Malassis, and Paris, Durand, 1767. Large quarto, xiij, [3], 739, [3] pp. Speckled fawn calfskin, spine with five raised bands and floral decoration, title page in green morocco, triple gilt fillet on the covers with gilt ermine spandrels, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette on the corners, blue marbled edges. First edition of this expanded translation; the *Compleat System of Opticks* was first published in 1738. This treatise exerted a significant influence on the scientists of the time. It is divided into three parts: An Exposition of Optics; Optics Treated by Means of Geometry and Calculus; The Method of Cutting Lenses and Mirrors for Telescopes, and a Description of Optical Instruments. It comprises 67 fold-out plates depicting, amongst other things, optical instruments.
