[PRÉVOST (Abbé Antoine François)]. A General History of Travel, or a New Collection of All Accounts of Journeys by Sea and Land, Which Have Been Published to Date in the Various Languages of All Known Nations [...]. 20 vols. in-4° (19 vols. of text and one vol. of atlases [only volume II out of 2]). Paris, Didot, 1746–1761 [vols. I–XVI], Amsterdam, Arkstée and Merkus, 1761 [vol. XVII], Paris, Rozet, 1768 [vol. XVIII] and Paris, Panckoucke, 1770 [vol. XIX]. Mottled fawn calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands and floral decoration, title page in red morocco, volume pages in green morocco, double gilt fillet on the edges, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this first major compilation of travel accounts, in the spirit of the Encyclopédie. It was also published in 80 volumes, in-12. Frontispiece portrait of the author, 325 engravings and 99 maps as separate plates. The maps were removed from the text volumes and bound into two atlas volumes, the first of which is unfortunately missing; it probably contained the maps from vols. I to X. The first part (vols. I–VII) is a translation by Abbé PRÉVOST of a work by John GREEN entitled *A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels*, published in London between 1745 and 1747. The second part (vols. VIII to XV) is a compilation by Abbé PRÉVOST himself. Volume XVI constitutes a general index of the first fifteen volumes. Volume XVII, entitled *Suite de l’Histoire Générale des Voyages*, deals with the Dutch East Indies. The final two volumes, entitled *Continuation of the General History of Voyages*, form a sequel by QUERLON and De SURGY. A final volume was subsequently published, which Brunet and Cohen note is often missing. A sought-after edition ‘both for the beauty of the engravings executed by skilled artists from the drawings of the famous Cochin, and for the maps and plans, which are also well executed’ (Boucher de la Rocharderie, I, p. 93). Brunet, IV, col. 868; Cohen, 824. A few very rare water stains; the interior is in very fresh condition; the engravings are in an excellent print. Binding defects; the title page of volume VIII is missing.
