Description
QUINTI (Joseph). The Admirable Secrets of Chemical Medicine by Mr Joseph Quinti, a Venetian physician: which he has compiled with great care and labour; and which have been tried and tested by himself on more than one occasion in the treatment of various ailments and dangerous diseases. Venice and Liège, J.F. Broncart, 1711. In-12, [10], 281, [7] pp. 2 frontispiece plates and 1 separate plate. Havana-coloured sheepskin, spine with 3 raised bands, decorated. (Contemporary binding). First French edition, rare. ‘This work, unknown to bibliographers, is divided into four books; it contains not only formulas for hermetic medicine, but also recipes for removing stains, for determining whether coral, porcelain and pearls are counterfeit, and for the preparation of varnishes, lacquers, dyes, perfumes, etc. The final book is devoted to astrology useful and necessary for physicians [regarding bloodletting].” (Dorbon, 3838, who cites only the 1740 edition). The spine is very worn, with the metal bands stamped upside down, and bears no title. The white endpapers have been trimmed, and the fore-edges are worn. Very faint water stains on the engravings, but not serious.
