500 plates by RACINET (excluding title pages), including 300 in colour, gold and silver, and 200 in monochrome, distributed across vols. II to VI, mounted on tabs. 12 line-drawn tables of patterns and templates, with explanations of the tables, in Vol. I.
General introduction, analytical table of plates and entries, index of historical figures, bibliography of costume, glossary and concordance table in Vol. I.
The work is divided into four parts: Classical Antiquity (Egypt, Persia, Greece, etc.), the world outside Europe (Oceania, Africa, the Americas and Asia), Christian peoples from the Byzantines onwards (Medieval Europe, jewellery, hairstyles, etc.) and Modern Europe by distinct nationalities (Scandinavia, Scotland, Spain, Poland, etc.).
A large-format first edition of ‘the most comprehensive general collection on costume’ (Colas). The illustrations were taken from previously published series and from original drawings drawn from public collections. The work was published in twenty instalments of twenty-five plates each. The first volume was published subsequently. The folio edition was printed on tinted paper.
