Description
SAUMAISE (Claude). Cl. Salmasii Epistola ad Andream Colvium: Super Cap. XI. Primæ ad Corinth. Epist. de Cæsarie virorum et mulierum coma. Leiden, Elzevir, 1644. Small 8vo, 474, [1] pp. Speckled fawn calfskin, spine with four raised bands, title page in red morocco, double gilt fillet on the covers, edges speckled with red. (Later binding).
First edition of this letter addressed to his friend Andreas COLVIUS on the question of whether long hair and a wig were permissible for a Christian man, a bizarre controversy which fascinated and divided the most famous scholars of the Dutch Evangelical Church for years.
Claude SAUMAISE (1588–1653), a Protestant, was forced into exile in Holland, where he succeeded SCALIGER at the University of Leiden (1632). His scholarly and polemical treatises earned him a European reputation. His encyclopaedic mind foreshadowed the work of BAYLE.
Minor damage to the headband, wear to the corners, darkened spine. A fine Elzevir edition.
