Description
TILLET (Jean du). A Compendium of the Kings of France, Their Crowns and Houses [...]. Paris, Jacques du Puys, 1586. Folio, [18] ff., 471 pp., [2], 113 [i.e. 107] ff. [Bound together with:] A Collection of the Wars and Treaties between the Kings of France and England. Paris, Jacques du Puys, 1588. Folio of [6], 172, [1] leaves. Mottled fawn calfskin, spine with 6 raised bands, gilt title, gilt fillet framing the covers with a large central gilt stamp, blind-stamped fillet on the endpapers (contemporary binding). Numerous wood-engraved royal portraits and coats of arms within the text; large printer’s mark on the title page of each volume. The *Recueil des roys de France*, together with the *Chronique abrégée des Rois de France*, in a second edition based on that of 1580, followed by the *Recueil des guerres et traictez*, in its first edition, serving as the second volume. A work of the utmost importance for French royal symbolism, and a seminal work in terms of both text and illustration. It originated from the commission granted by HENRY II on 21 December 1548 to Jean du TILLET, instructing him to compile from the registers of the Parliament of Paris – of which he was secretary and civil clerk – the regulations, statutes, ordinances, etc. relating to the ranks, precedence and orders held by princes, officers of the Crown and other great lords of the kingdom in all assemblies during the reigns of previous kings of France. Saffroy, I, 10253–10254; Brunet, II, 923. Various handwritten bookplates, including one from 1693 and another by Antoine CHARRETON. A few minor foxing spots, discolouration and water stains; upper white endpaper and title page restored and reattached; spine and corners skilfully restored.
