Description
ERCKMANN-CHATRIAN. [BELTZ (Robert)]. Tales from the Banks of the Rhine. Strasbourg, Published at the Artist’s own expense, 1951–1952. 2 vols., in-4°, 139 pp.; 122 pp. Loose-leaf, filled cover, fawn and green half-suede slipcase, brown and green sheepskin title page, beige cloth slipcases. The first volume contains 55 watercolours, the second 47, by BELTZ, wood-engraved by Gilbert POILLIOT. Printed in a run of just over 299 copies on pure-fibre Lana vellum; this is no. 54. Included, on an endpaper of the second volume, is a fine dedication by the artist: ‘To Mr H. Chevallier, with warm regards. Robert Beltz, January 1965’, in the margin of a large ink and pencil drawing depicting a pensive 18th-century walker striding along with long strides.
