[MORILLON (Guy de)]. OVID. Textus Epistolarum Ovidii. Publii Ovidii Nasonis Heroidum. Epistles / And the replies of Aulus Sabinus, as well as the most witty curses directed at a certain man whom he calls Ibin: recently reviewed with the utmost care, and published with all errors most thoroughly corrected. With an introduction by Guidon Morillon to the individual Epistles, prefixed to each chapter; together with frequent marginal notes for the convenience of young readers, as it were, interspersed like little stars to guide the way. Pharrisiis [Paris], Mauricio de Porta, undated [c. 1540]. In-8°, 104 folios (Sign.: A6, B-N8). Wood-engraved title page. Havana-coloured sheepskin, spine with four raised bands, framing fillets and bands decorated with blind-stamped interlacing on the covers (contemporary binding). An edition of Ovid’s *Heroides* prepared by Guy de Morillon, secretary to Charles V, a close friend of Erasmus and author of notes on several of Ovid’s works. His son Maximilien was a friend and confidant of Cardinal de Granvelle. The *Heroides* are fictional love letters in elegiac couplets that draw on mythological elements; most were written by mythological or quasi-legendary heroines lamenting the absence or indifference of their beloved. The last six consist of three letters from heroes, to which three letters from their respective lovers reply. Handwritten bookplates by Pierre BILLION (Petrus Billione). On the inside covers and endpapers, in ink, are several drawings, coats of arms, quotations—including some from Ovid—a poem [?] signed BILLION, and pen sketches. Adams does not cite our edition, but refers to another work published by Mauricius de PORTA in 1543; Aligny mentions only two editions of the Heroides by MORILLON, both published in Lyon in 1551 and 1557. Leaves 7–8 of section A are missing; there is water damage and a few wormholes affecting the text; the binding is badly damaged; sold as is.
