SALES, Saint François de (1567–1622). *Introduction to the Devout Life*. Paris, Imprimerie du Louvre, 1641. Folio, contemporary calfskin, with a decorated ribbed spine. The finest edition of this work available at the time. The first edition, in 8vo format, dates from 1608 but is now impossible to find. Saint François de Sales was the founder of the Order of the Visitation, later Bishop of Geneva, and, in addition to his *Introduction to the Devout Life*—which enjoyed enormous success and was translated into all European languages—he wrote the *Treatise on the Love of God*, ‘which aroused universal admiration’ (Hoefer).
