Description
Carta Esferica de las costas orientales de los Estados Unidos [Spanish Chart of the East Coast, 1826]
60 × 88 cm.
A very rare and spectacular map of the American coastline.
"A scarce, large-format nautical chart of the east coast of the United States, published in Madrid in 1826, engraved and produced by the Spanish Hydrographic Office (Dirección de Hidrografía de España). This coastal chart depicts the region from New York and Long Island in the north to Amelia Island in Florida, near the Georgia border. Several cities, including Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York, are shown. The Bermuda Islands are visible in the lower right-hand corner. This chart shows few signs of use, with some stains and handwritten annotations, suggesting it was actually used at sea. Nautical charts were essential tools on board ships and were often heavily annotated with navigational notes. When updated charts were published, older versions were generally discarded quickly, which explains their current scarcity. This particular chart is extremely rare on the market. --------------- A rare large-format nautical chart of the east coast of the United States, published in Madrid in 1826, engraved and produced by the Spanish Hydrographic Office.
