Description
MAISTRE (Xavier de) – Complete Works. Paris, Garnier, c. 1880; 4to, XXXVI–471 pp., brown half-maroquin binding, plain spine with decoration, gilt edges. Xavier de Maistre (1763–1852) was born into an aristocratic family with roots in Savoy and Provence. He began a military career and wrote the famous *Voyage autour de ma chambre* (1794). In 1798, he fought against the revolutionaries in Italy. In 1799, he joined the Russian army and opened a painting studio in Moscow which became fashionable. His landscapes enjoyed some success. In 1810, he fought in the Caucasus and was appointed general in 1813, which meant he was better known in Russia than in France. In 1825, he returned to France, where his writings on the Caucasus were well received. Very good condition.
