Description
[BEST LELOIR HOTELIN and REGNIER] – TOPFFER (Rodolphe) – Geneva Short Stories. Paris, Garnier, c. 1880; in-4, 428 pp., red half-shagreen binding, spine with five raised bands, gilt edges. Rodolphe Töpffer was a Genevan illustrator of the first half of the 19th century. He was often regarded as the inventor of the comic strip, on a par with the Epinal prints. It was his own travels that Töpffer illustrated with the verve of a caricaturist. Töpffer also had a political career in the canton of Geneva, characterised by very conservative views. Sixth edition, illustrated by the finest artists of the nineteenth century.
