Description
[LE TOUR DU MONDE] – COLLECTIVE – A complete collection of the journal *Le Tour du monde* from 1860 (its first year) to 1905. Paris, Aux Bureaux de la Revue, 1860–1895; quarto, approximately 420 pp. per volume, bound in red half-calf with corner caps, spines decorated with five raised bands, edges painted. All 82 volumes. Illustrated with numerous engravings. The journal was published under the editorship of Edouard Charton. The years 1870–71 are combined into a single volume. Our copy features two different bindings which, however, complement each other very well, as they are both the same shade of red; one might almost think a different bookbinder was used. Only the 1894 volume is missing to complete the series from its inception to 1895 (the journal was published until 1914). The work is illustrated by the greatest illustrators of the era, including Gustave Doré, Trichon, Lancelot, Bérard, Valentin, Grandsire, Duvaux, Rouargues and others. Edouard Charton, assisted by Hachette, published in *Le Tour du monde* accounts of the great explorations of Western travellers, including Bourquelot, Gobineau, Trollope, Riant, Barth, Yule, Burton, Debono, Dana, etc., as well as the greatest geographers of the time, including Elisée Reclus, Vuillemin and Joanne.
