Description
19- CORNEILLE (Pierre and Thomas): ‘Works with Voltaire’s Commentaries’. Paris: published by Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1817. 12 volumes, in-8. Two frontispiece portraits, depicting Pierre and Thomas Corneille, drawn and engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, and 24 illustrations, engraved by Roger, Ribault, Simonet, Bosq and other artists, after Jean-Michel MOREAU THE YOUNGER and Pierre-Paul PRUD’HON. This copy is complete with all 26 engraved plates. The famous composition of the ‘Carrying of the Cross’, drawn by Prud’hon and engraved by Roger for *The Imitation of Christ*, is indeed present. This plate is particularly sought-after and is frequently missing from copies. Contemporary green half-basane binding. Smooth spines decorated with gilt and ‘cold-stamped’ motifs (some scuffing). Marbled covers, endpapers and edges. Wear and slight tears at the bottom of the spine of the last volume. Satisfactory condition overall. The copy is enhanced by a small engraved portrait of Pierre Corneille, dating from the 18th century; a genealogical table of the Corneille family, to which is attached a printed prospectus dated 1822, issued by a Pierre Corneille, a descendant of the playwright, announcing the opening of a bookshop; the document bears an old handwritten address on the reverse; finally, a 19th-century handwritten leaflet comprising 14 lines. A fine, complete copy featuring its important illustration, in a contemporary binding, enriched with iconographic, genealogical and handwritten items relating to the Corneille family.
