Spine with decorated faux raised bands. Handwritten bookplate by Gabriel DE LACGER (from the Tarn region). A fine copy overall. FIRST EDITION of this autobiographical account. Under the pseudonym Fanny Lear, Harriet Clarissima Ely Blackford offers a personal account of the aristocratic society of St Petersburg and of her stay in Russia. The book caused quite a stir due to the author’s affair with Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich, grandson of Tsar Nicholas I.
