73 – 18th-century manuscript – A collection of logbooks by Charles BELLOC, a merchant navy officer. 68 pages, in-4 (37 x 23 cm), written in brown ink, comprising the logbook of the ship Le Florissant, which set sail from Bordeaux on 22 March 1746 bound for America, the logbook of the ship L’Amitié, commanded by François Carlaignet Mingoy, for the return voyage from America on 4 March 1747; an untitled logbook from 1748 from Royan; an untitled logbook from 1748 (untitled) from Martinique, part of the 1749 logbook (one page missing) and the logbook of the ship l’Annibal, commanded by Monsieur Anblard, which set sail from Bordeaux on 3 August 1749 for Saint-Domingue. Numerous descriptions of ships (including the Royal Protective Fleet), navigation techniques of the period, references to distances, latitudes and longitudes, and even calls to arms and cannon fire… Worn cover of the period with handwritten traces of calculations. A VERY RARE account of the 18th-century French merchant navy.
