Leiden: published by Samuel Luchtmans, 1730. Fourth edition, revised, corrected and expanded, with a biography of the author by M. Des Maizeaux. 4 folio volumes. Dedication to the Duke of Orléans adorned with a vignette engraved by Bernard Picart; headbands, initials and tailpieces. Included is: ‘Supplement to Monsieur Bayle’s Historical and Critical Dictionary, for the editions of MDCCII and MDCCXV’ Geneva, Fabri & Barrillot, 1722. Folio, with a prominent frontispiece portrait of Pierre Bayle. A rare supplement published separately to supplement earlier editions. Five volumes in contemporary bindings, in full sheepskin, spined with ribs richly decorated with gilded motifs and fleurons, with title labels and volume number labels. Some scuffing, damaged caps, a few scattered areas of discolouration; slight paper loss at the bottom of the endpapers of Volume II. Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of Gabriel de Lacger, an old family from the Tarn region. The set is in satisfactory condition. An important set of Bayle’s *Dictionnaire*, complete with the RARE 1722 supplement.
