84- BELLEFOREST (François de): ‘The History of the Nine Kings Charles of France: recounting the fortunes, virtues, and fateful misfortunes of the kings who, bearing the name Charles, accomplished marvellous deeds. ’ Paris. P. L’Huillier, 1568. (printed by Jean Le Blanc). In folio (33 x 23 cm). 9 unnumbered pages (title page, dedicatory epistle to King Charles IX and preface), 1 blank folio, 684 numbered pages, 19 unnumbered folios (table of contents and licence). Woodcut vignette on the title page. Headers and initials decorated in the grotesque style. Lower corners of the first 3 leaves damaged. Some traces of foxing along the edges of a few pages. The endpapers are missing. Contemporary full brown calfskin binding (with scuffing and a few losses). Covers decorated with a central oval medallion in gold, adorned with arabesques (a minor loss of leather on the back cover). Spine ribbed and decorated with small floral motifs (some leather missing at the cap ends). Interior in good condition considering the age of the book. A RARE FIRST EDITION of this landmark work on the history of France during the Renaissance. This work brought François de Belleforest (1530–1583), a native of Comminges, considerable renown and contributed to his appointment as the king’s historiographer.
