106 – LALLY-TOLLENDAL (Case) – A significant collection of documents relating to the Lally-Tollendal case, comprising six quarto-sized paperback volumes and over 20 notebooks, loose sheets or printed fragments in quarto format, some published in Rouen by the Widow Besongne towards the end of the 18th century. Memoirs, summaries, pleadings, legal opinions, supporting documents and correspondence relating to the case of Thomas-Arthur de Lally, Count of Lally-Tollendal (1702–1766), Lieutenant-General of the King’s armies, who was sentenced to death and executed in 1766 following the capitulation of Pondicherry. Three quires and one volume held together by a cord, with a handwritten leaf bearing the inscription ‘Rehabilitation proceedings, duplicate documents’. Volumes in period covers, showing signs of wear; printed quires and fragments, some of which are incomplete or mismatched. A diverse collection of printed documents. Some signs of wear, creases, soiling and minor damage depending on the item. Fair condition. A curious and unusual collection of documents.
