Description
122- PERRAULT (Charles): ‘Illustrious Men Who Have Appeared in France During This Century, with Their Life-Size Portraits’. Paris: published by Antoine Dezallier, 1696–1700. 2 volumes in 1 folio volume (43.5 × 29 cm). Frontispiece portrait of Charles Perrault and an engraved frontispiece in Volume I, and a frontispiece portrait of Antoine Arnauld in Volume II. 100 separate copper-engraved portraits, including that of Blaise Pascal. Page 1 has a tear. A gallery of verses in the margin at the end of the volume. A split in the portrait of Honoré d’Urfé. Paper losses at the upper corners of leaves at the beginning and end of the volume. Paper losses at the edges of the last three leaves. Contemporary full sheepskin binding, well-used, spine with decorative false raised bands, title label, some leather loss and damaged cap ends. In fair condition overall. FIRST EDITION. A particularly interesting copy due to the preservation of the original notes by Antoine Arnauld and Blaise Pascal, which were replaced in revised copies by those of Louis Thomassin and Du Cange: the leaves corresponding to pp. 15–16 and 65–66 are therefore present in duplicate. The portrait of Antoine Arnauld is preserved as the frontispiece portrait in Volume II, and that of Blaise Pascal is included amongst the separate portraits.
