Description
139- [WICQUEFORT (Abraham van)] and [GALARDI (Ferdinand de)]: ‘Memoirs concerning Ambassadors and Public Ministers by L.M.P.’ Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1677. Followed by: ‘Reflections on the Memoirs for Ambassadors, and a Response to the Imprisoned Minister, with Curious Examples and Important Research.’ Published in Ville-Franche by Pierre Petit, 1677. Two works in one sturdy in-16 volume, each with its own title page, preceded by a general title page; ‘sphere-style’ title page for the Memoirs. Full contemporary sheepskin binding, ribbed spine. Binding worn, slight tear to the upper cap. Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of Gabriel DE LACGER, a former family from the Tarn region. Satisfactory condition overall. Wicquefort’s Mémoires, published anonymously under the initials L.M.P. (‘Le Ministre Prisonnier’) and written whilst in prison, set out a modern theory of diplomacy and the rights of ambassadors. The first edition dates from 1676; the 1677 edition is one of the earliest reprints. The second volume, by Ferdinand de Galardi, is a refutation of the *Mémoires*, published in the same year and presented here in its first edition.
