Description
250- CUVIER (Georges): *The Animal Kingdom Classified According to its Organisation, to Serve as a Basis for the Natural History of Animals and as an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy*. Paris, Fortin, Masson et Cie, Booksellers, n.d. [1836–1849]. 22 tomes in 20 volumes, large 8vo (complete), comprising 10 volumes of text and 10 atlas volumes. The work is lavishly illustrated with nearly 1,000 separate plates, engraved and finely hand-coloured at the time, with a few plates in black. Garnet half-chagrin binding with period corners, spine with faux raised bands decorated with gilt panels, gilt head edges. Several text leaves are browned; some signs of wear to the bindings. The plates are, for the most part, well preserved, with colours of remarkable vibrancy. Satisfactory condition overall. A RARE complete edition, known as the ‘disciples’ edition’, published under the supervision of several of the leading naturalists of the period, and particularly sought-after for the scope and quality of its colour illustrations.
