Description
252- DIDEROT (Denis), D'ALEMBERT (Jean Le Rond d’): ‘Encyclopédie, or A Reasoned Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Trades, by a Society of Men of Letters. ’ Geneva, published by Pellet, Printer and Bookseller, 1777–1779. 39 volumes in very small quarto, comprising 36 volumes of text and 3 volumes of plates. Frontispiece portraits of Diderot and d’Alembert, drawn by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and engraved by Louis-Jacques Cathelin, headpieces and tailpieces, fold-out tables within the text volumes and nearly 500 engraved plates, including several fold-outs, devoted to the sciences, arts and crafts, collected in the three volumes of plates (some of which are mounted upside down in Volume II). A marginal paper loss at the upper corner of the last leaves of Volume XVI. Full marbled sheepskin binding of the period, spine decorated with gilt scrolls and floral motifs, with title and volume number labels. The bindings are uniform, showing a few slight snags and signs of wear, but in fine overall condition for a copy of this size. First in-4 edition of the Encyclopédie, known as the ‘new edition’, published in Geneva by Jean-Léonard Pellet. This edition, more manageable than the original Parisian folio edition, reproduces the text of the Encyclopédie whilst incorporating numerous corrections and additions, as well as new articles. A complete and uniform copy, rare in this state of preservation and in its uniform contemporary bindings.
