Description
489- GODONNESCHE (Nicolas) – FLEURIMONT (G.-R.). ‘Medals of the Reign of Louis XV’. No place, no date [Paris, 1736]. Small folio (33 x 24 cm). The title is engraved within a rocaille cartouche, followed by an allegorical frontispiece engraved by Jean-François Cars after a design by François Le Moine. This is followed by the dedication page to the King, the text of which has been cut out, leaving only its engraved border, then the complete set of 54 plates of medals, all numbered from 1 to 54 (including plate no. 5, devoted to ‘The Regent’s Diligence in Affairs’ (1716), preserved as a loose sheet and unbound), each featuring a medal at the centre of an engraved frame, accompanied by an explanatory commentary. The blank endpapers are missing. Contemporary green vellum (scuffing, losses on the back cover near the edge). Ribbed spine. Satisfactory condition overall. A very rare collection, entirely engraved on copper, devoted to the principal events of the reign of Louis XV, from the young monarch’s accession in 1715 until 1736.
