Description
493 – JAURÈS (François-Jean-Joseph): ‘Arts & Métiers’ 1883–1886. Folio volume comprising 60 plates from the École d’Arts et Métiers in Aix, 43 of which are coloured. Original green cardboard binding by ALBARÈDE, showing signs of wear. Covers stained and cloth coming away at the spine. Interior in satisfactory condition. The volume is enriched with several personal and family documents: a letter from the bookbinder Albarède relating to the volume; 4 old photographic cards, one of which, mounted on a backing, bears on the reverse a handwritten inscription by François-Jean-Joseph Jaurès: ‘To my uncle and my beloved parents. Their nephew and son’, followed by his AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE; this photograph depicts two men in naval uniform, one of whom, on the right, appears to be a naval officer in appearance and dress. This figure is likely to be Louis JAURÈS (1860–1937), the younger brother of Jean Jaurès, a naval officer and lieutenant from 1885 onwards. (This identification, based in particular on the chronological fit, the uniform and the resemblance to known portraits of Louis Jaurès, is offered merely as a suggestion and would require documentary confirmation to be regarded as certain); Diploma from the Écoles Nationales d’Arts et Métiers, awarded to François-Jean-Joseph Jaurès for the Aix School, on 15 September 1886, bearing the HANDWRITTEN SIGNATURE of the Minister for Trade and Industry, Édouard LOCKROY.
