521- [BOSSUET (Jacques-Bénigne)], [BIDA (Alexandre)] – The Holy Gospels. Translated by Bossuet. Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1873. 2 large folio volumes (approx. 57 × 38 cm). A monumental edition, illustrated with 128 large etchings based on drawings by Alexandre BIDA, under the supervision of Édouard Hédouin, with text decorations designed by Charles Rossigneux. Superb contemporary full morocco binding, ‘à la Du Seuil’, signed BERTRAND, adorned on the covers with gilded frame motifs; spine with false ribs and richly decorated panels; gilded roulette within an inner frame; gilded edges. A few foxing spots. Split headbands on Volume I only, without detracting from the impressive overall presentation. The bindings show some scuffing but remain highly decorative. A fine copy of this publication in full signed morocco, which, in its exceptional format, constitutes one of the most remarkable achievements of 19th-century French religious illustration.
