Description
526 – SAINT AUGUSTINE: ‘The City of God…’ Paris: published by the widow of Claude de Monstroeil, 1610. Very small folio (approx. 35.5 x 23 cm). Text in two columns in French, with commentaries by Jean-Louis Vivès, a translation by Gentian Hervet and observations by François de Belleforest. Fourth expanded edition of the Treatise on the Unity of the Church against the Donatists and Epistles 48 and 50, plus St Jerome’s Dialogue against the Luciferians (translated by Jacques Tigeou). Engraved vignette on the title page. Dedicatory epistle to King Charles IX. Headers and initials. Browning on the half-leather at the beginning of the volume. Paper loss at the bottom edge of pages 589 to 772, without significant damage to the text. Reused binding; the covers and spine are covered with handwritten parchment from an 18th-century antiphonary, mounted on stiff boards. Restorations. The red colour of the letters and musical staves on the parchment has been recently retouched. Some signs of wear. The copy is in fair condition overall.
