CARTARI (Vicenzo). *The Images of the Gods of the Ancients*, containing the idols, rites, ceremonies and other matters pertaining to the religion of the ancients, with their explanations and with beautiful and well-composed illustrations, newly reprinted. Lyon, Stefano Michele, 1581. In-8, [53]-1bl.-476 pages, poorly paginated, red half-basane, plain spine (19th-century binding). This work was first published in 1556 and went through numerous editions. Indeed, its rich iconography depicting the gods of antiquity, accompanied by extensive commentary, proved of great use to Renaissance artists; it is illustrated with 88 FULL-PAGE WOODCUTS attributed to Thomas Arande and a small woodcut within the text.
